Security and International Politics in the South China Sea
This edited volume examines the complex security and international-political dynamics of the South China Sea region — a maritime space long regarded as a locus of inter-state tension and strategic competition. It surveys the historic roots of territorial disputes, the shifting geostrategic interplay of regional and global powers, and the evolving challenge of managing the sea’s resources (oil, gas, fisheries) and environment. The book incorporates both traditional security issues (naval confrontation, sovereignty disputes, maritime strategy) and non-traditional ones (resource governance, environmental protection, maritime safety, piracy, maritime terrorism). As these threads converge, the authors argue, the region faces an urgent need for cooperative management mechanisms rather than purely adversarial conflict. Drawing on case studies and regional institutional dynamics (including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-China Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea), the work explores prospects for a functional, rules-based regime that can reduce risk, protect shared interests, and promote peace and stability.
