2016 Global Forecast
The 2016 Global Forecast is an annual collection of essays by CSIS subject-matter experts that identifies the major issues expected to shape global security, diplomacy, economics and governance in the near year ahead.
CSIS
The report is structured into thematic parts covering geostrategy, U.S. strategic posture, the Middle East, Russia/Europe/Eurasia, Asia (including Northeast, Southeast and South Asia), Africa, the U.S. Department of Defense and related capabilities (“Inside the Pentagon”), evolving threats and capabilities (such as cyber, space, nuclear weapons), energy and security, and human rights/human security/public diplomacy.
CSIS
The report articulates how the global environment in 2016 will be marked by increased strategic competition, declining margins of error for policy, and complex interactions between traditional great-power rivalries and emerging non-state and transnational threats. It argues that U.S. leadership and alliance structures will face critical tests, China’s economic and geopolitical slowdown will have ripple effects across Asia, Russia’s assertiveness will shape the European frontier, and low oil prices together with an evolving energy transition will influence global power. Simultaneously, humanitarian challenges, cyber threats, and shifts in public diplomacy will demand agility beyond hard military capabilities. In this light, the volume aims to provide policymakers, scholars and practitioners with insight into forthcoming “flashpoints”, decision nodes, and risk factors, while urging proactive preparation and strategic flexibility.
