Literature In The Market Place
During the eighteenth century the foundations were laid for what was later to be called the reading public. The invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century provided the technical precondition for a much wider dispersal of the written word, but it was not until the period of blossoming capitalism in the eighteenth century that the aristocracys exlusive privilege of education was finally broken.
