In 1972 the Australian Labor Party led by E.G. Whitlam won its first Federal election for twenty-there years. If ALP preelection statements could be considered a reliable guide to future conduct, then it seemed clear that Australian foreign and defence policy was to undergo an unprecedented change in method, style and direction.
