The 17th AMM in July 1984, Jakarta adopted most of the recommendations of the Task Force wich was established in July 1982 to undertake a comprehensive review and appraisal of ASEAN cooperation. The adopted recomendations, which are being implemented, would guide ASEAN in promoting greater regional stability and closer cooperation among ASEAN countries.
ASEAN continued to adopt a joint stand and comon approach on international economic issues.
Five ASEAN agreements were also signed at the end of the Third ASEAN Summit. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers signed the Protocol Amending the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, witch would allow other states in Southeast Asia and states outside Southeast Asia to accede to the Treaty
ASEAN, turning twenty-one years old this year, could be regarded as having passed the threshold of adulthood.
The biggest political challenge confronting ASEAN today, as in the resent past, is the Kampuchean question.
The economic picture likewise has not been as rosy as it used to be. ASEANs trade performance in recent years has become more and more dismal.
ASEAN Documents Series 1967 - 1988 is the Third Editionof the publication. The first edition, ASEAN Documents Series 1969 - 1985 and Revised edition of 1967 - 1986, were published in May 1985 and May 1986 respectively.
Cooperation between ASEAN and its dialogue partners has also been strengthened at both the governmental and the private sector levels.
